About us

The Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities was established in 2021 at the Faculty of Medicine thanks to a generous donation from the Birgit Rausing Foundation for Medical Humanities. The Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities develops and implements interdisciplinary Medical Humanities in research, in education and in collaboration.

Medical Humanities, what is it?

The concept ‘Medical Humanities’ is a designation for interdisciplinary approaches where concepts and methods from different spheres of knowledge come together, and where the Humanities, the Social Sciences and the Fine Arts play crucial parts in the development of Medicine and Health Science.

About Medical Humanities

Our foundations

What does the creation of the new centre of knowledge require? In our case, several foundations were crucial.

Our main foundations

Collaboration

We cooperate with the health services, not least the Skåne University Hospital and Region Skåne, the joint public health services in Skåne (Scania). We want to connect to former students, as well as with associations for patients and their families. Our collaboration with other universities and other higher education institutions within and outside Sweden is invaluable.

The Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities forms part of one of Lund University’s thematic collaboration initiatives under the theme of Existential resilience, aesthetics and shared humanity.

Our collaborations

Education and professional development

Within the medical programme at Lund University, medical humanities bring new perspectives and approaches in both compulsory and elective courses and course elements. Other programmes at Lund University have also shown interest in including concepts and methods from the medical humanities. The Birgit Rausing Centre for Medical Humanities also offers competence development initiatives for healthcare professionals.

Research

The Birgit Rausing Center for Medical Humanities creates conditions for conducting, coordinating and inspiring interdisciplinary research in the medical humanities. Our focus is the good interpersonal relationship between the patient and the health care professionals. This also applies to the centre's first central research theme on empathy and compassion as well as other research projects.
